Great Northern Peninsula Pictures

Pictures and photos of the different areas on the Great Northern Peninsula on the west coast of Newfoundland in Canada. (There are 108 photos in this photo gallery.)

The Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, also known as the Great Northern Peninsula, is home to Gros Morne National Park as well as the Viking Trail (aka Trails to the Vikings).

This is a region steeped in history, culture, and tradition as well as a treasure trove of geological wonders.

See the earth's mantle in the Tablelands region of Gros Morne National Park or take a cruise on the park's largest lake - Western Brook Pond, a land bound fjord .

The rugged coastline is dotted with quaint fishing villages where the people there still speak the Newfoundland lingo.

Norsemen sailed the Atlantic waters in search of a new land around the year 1000 CE. They left evidence of their settlements at L'Anse aux Meadows at the northern end of the Great Northern Peninsula. It is now a Canadian National Historic Site as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Icebergs cruise the currents of the Atlantic and drift or sometimes get beached along the coast of the northernmost tip of the peninsula. ...More information below photos...
