Situated at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows is an important archeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site of the remains of a norse (or viking) village, L'Anse aux Meadows was discovered in 1960 by Norwegian explorer Dr. Helge Ingstad. He and his wife Dr. Anne Stine Ingstad uncovered eight complete norse houses and the remains of another.
The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1968 because it appears to be the first known viking settlement (outside of Greenland) in North America, and contains the earliest evidence of European settlement in Canada, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus.
L'Anse aux Meadows is now a popular tourist destination with attractions such as the actual National Historic Site of Canada, Norstead - a viking port of trade, northern peninsula coastal scenery, and one has to mention the Norseman Restaurant.
