This Vipiteno scene silhouetted against the South Tyrolean Alps shows a church on a hill, surrounded by homes and trees with the magnificent mountains as a backdrop. A scene which probably has remained the same for many years. Vipiteno or Sterzig (the German name) is close to the Austrian border and located in the Eisack Valley, on the main route, used for centuries, from Innsbruck in Austria to Bolzano in Italy.Vipiteno, in the South Tyrol, started as a little mining town in the 14th century when silver and lead was discovered.
