One of the top tourist attractions in the city of Lucca is the Piazza Anfiteatro an old Roman Amphitheatre dates back to 180 BC and some of the original stonework can still be seen in the piazza.
A Roman Amphitheatre stood on this site which is now known as the Piazza Anfiteatro, built in 180 BC, which was used for spectacles and shows until the 6th Century. After that, this space became a quarry to supply the town with building materials for the churches and palaces. During the Middle Ages, houses and other structures were built inside the oval space, and it wasn't until the 19th century when an architect redesigned the space that all the buildings inside the Amphitheatre were removed and the present day buildings were built on the Roman foundations so that the area still retains the original shape today.
Nowadays the Amphitheatre is filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants that allow plenty of opportunity for having a delicious meal and a glass of wine, and doing some people watching.
