An area dating back millions of years, Bisti Wilderness has an array of geological land formations from hoodoos, buttes, round egg shaped rocks and more.
Now a desert scene, Bisti Wilderness was an ancient sea. Over millions of years the sea receded and the area became a lush forest and rivers where dinosaurs roamed. After the last ice age, with the ice receding, the landscape was left high and dry to become arid desert. The land formations seen in Bisti are a result of the geological events which took place between being an ancient sea and then a desert.
As can be seen in this picture of hoodoos, there are many layers of various rocks and mud which were deposited over time and are slowly being exposed through erosion.
