Heather and Paul McCartney spend some time with a baby harp seal on the ice floes in the Gulf of St Lawrence, to raise awareness about the inhumane animal hunt for baby harp seals set to begin in March.
It is anticipated that because of a weather anomaly causing thinner and less pack ice, many of the seals will drown from a lack of ice to dwell on.
Although white coat baby harp seals are not the target of the hunt, there are still some questions about the techniques used during the hunt. Shooting seems to be the most humane method of killing these animals however it is thought that some seals are still being clubbed with a hakapik or shot only to the brink of death - before being skinned.
In a report by a veterinary journal, it was established that at least 98% of seals had been killed in a humane manner, however that was a study done in 2002.
