Go North and gamble? You're guaranteed an adventure. The Yukon Territory is home to Canada's first casino, still operating today as a throwback to the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 1800s. The gold-hounds may not all have struck rich, but they would have been hard pressed not to stumble on adventure, at least. Today's visitors can be guaranteed the same- adventure, at least, for all who come looking.
The Dempster Highway opened in 1979, and with it opened 671 kilometers (417 miles) of Canada's arctic. The highway sees 24-hour sunlight during the summertime, while cold winter nights bring the Northern Lights out in all their colorful splendor.
Those seeking arctic mountains need looks no further than the Tombstone Mountains, a Territorial park along the Dempster Highway, the only Canadian road to cross the Arctic Circle at 66º33'N.
The Yukon is also home the world's smallest dessert at Carcross (formerly Caribou Crossing). 260 hectares of rolling dunes lie just South of Whitehorse, the Yukon's capital city. Less than 500 people call Carcross home, but tourists come year-round to see the shifting sands.
