Before you set out on the Dempster Highway be aware that the road is entirely gravel except about ten kilometers in Inuvik and the first twenty kilometers from the Dawson turn off. Once you hit the sign welcoming you to the Yukon, another leg of the journey has been completed.
When you pass this welcome sign there are some extremely steep grades as the hill sign forewarns you. The grades at their steepest are on the eight to nine percent levels and keeping your eyes on the road at all times is very important.
Beautiful scenic spots or wildlife encounters will happen along your journey but be sure to pull over and stop - do not try and sightsee while driving. The service stations along the Dempster Highway can sometimes be up to...
... 350 kilometers apart so be sure to gas up and replenish your food stock at each station.
A sign welcoming you to the next destination is always a nice sight to see especially when you drive the entire Dempster Highway which extends for 461 miles. Always be prepared before driving the Dempster Highway in the Yukon as road conditions can vary dramatically depending on the weather.
