The blue sky over the highway in the Yukon Territory of Canada is filled with billowing smoke from a forest fire. Forest fires can burn approximately 200 hectares of forest land in the Yukon Territories on a yearly basis and there are about 100 separate fires each year. It is not an uncommon sight to be driving along the highway and see clouds of smoke over the hillsides.
The Trans Canada Highway does not actually pass through the Yukon but there are three major highways that do. In the southern region there is the Alaska Highway, the Klondike Highway that runs through the middle and the Dempster Highway which is unpaved and connects to the North West Territories.
Each highway can be very primitive in areas and gas stations,...
... restaurants and hotels are very far and few between. When travelling these highways in the Yukon it is always a good idea to have extra gasoline, tires and necessities as a precaution. You never know when you might run into problem spots such as a forest fire or snowy conditions in the winter months.
The highway route through the Yukon has some amazing scenery and traffic is not a problem so many stops can be made along the way for photo opportunities.
