A medium sized mammal, the raccoon is often referred to as North American raccoon, Common raccoon, or northern raccoon. It is also sometimes simply referred to as "coon".
Although their original habitats include the deciduous or mixed forests of North America, raccoons have managed to adapt themselves to the point that they can now inhabit coastal, mountainous, and even urban areas. Raccoons are less welcome in urban areas and are considered pests because they find easy food in gardens, and waste areas.
Although raccoons originated in North America, there is also now a large population in Germany...
... which originated from several releases of the animal into the wild either by accident or on purpose.
