An adorable species of penguin is the Yellow Eyed Penguin which is considered to be the third largest penguin in the world and lives and breeds on the forested coastline of New Zealand as well as the sub-Antarctic Islands to the south of New Zealand. The Yellow Eyed Penguin loves to reside in the forest and scrub land where they may travel up to 30 kilometers a day to feed on Red Cod, Opal Fish, Sprat, Silversides, Ahuru, Blue Cod and Squid.
The Yellow Eyed Penguin has decreased considerably in numbers over the years and since 1987 there has been a Trust created for these penguins that is aimed at saving them by restoring coastal forests and controlling predators.
There are various sights to view the Yellow Eyed Penguin in New Zealand and are best to watch at dawn or dusk as they leave their nests early and head out for a day's fishing only to return near the last two hours of daylight. Along the Otago Coast of New Zealand there are four public viewing huts which are free of charge to get a closer look at the Yellow Eyed Penguin.
As you will see in our collection of Yellow Eyed Penguin pictures, New Zealand is the ideal spot to capture this bird in its natural environment.
