As a Yellow-eyed Penguin comes ashore at the Fossil Forest in Curio Bay, Otago in New Zealand, he stops to scratch himself before continuing back to his nest. This is common behavior from a penguin as once they emerge from the water, they need to scratch as their soft overlapping feathers can take some time to dry.
A very rare penguin, it is considered to be an endangered bird in New Zealand and to watch these penguins as they come ashore, must be done away from the beach and out of sight. If anyone lingers around the beach, the Yellow-eyed Penguin will stay in the water until the coast is clear.
