Its Objibwe name of Gichigami means 'big water' and that it is. Large ocean-like swells are often experienced on Lake Superior and during some winter months waves have been recorded to reach heights of over 6 metres (20 feet).
Being as large as Lake Superior is, it creates its own climate - more of a maritime type of climate which can be compared to Nova Scotia. The lake itself also helps to maintain and moderate air temperatures.
Lake Superior is the worlds largest freshwater lake by surface area only, however another lake in Russia (Lake Baikai) holds the title of largest by volume.
