A male Wood Duck is considered to be one of the most beautiful species of duck in North America and this one is easy to admire at the Biodome de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec. As this Wood duck leisurely swims atop the water, it gave tourists to the Biodome the ideal opportunity to snap a picture or two.
The male Wood Duck is definitely the more showy of the two species as he has multiple colors that surround his head with its red eyes being very dominant. It has a reddish brown spotted chest with a plumage along its backside also showing a multiple of colors. The female Wood Duck is still very beautiful but it is not quite as colorful as the male Wood Duck and telling them apart is fairly easy.
This Wood Duck will grow to be about 680 grams in weight while the female only reaches a weight of about 460 grams. They also differ in the sounds that they make as the male Wood Duck has two different vocalization calls while the female only has one.
Hunters took a toll on the Wood Duck which left very few remaining back in the 1900's but after a ban was put into place from 1918 to 1941, the Wood Duck has made a considerable comeback. Each Wood Duck that is found in captivity, like this one at the Biodome de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, is very well taken care of and has beautiful surroundings throughout its habitat.
While visiting Montreal, be sure to venture to this unique tourist attraction where you can view a Wood Duck at close range. It is easier to take a picture here than to try and find a Wood Duck in its natural environment somewhere throughout North America.
