Wood Bison Alberta: Scientific Name:
Bison bison athabascae
The Wood Bison is one of the largest animals that resides solely on the ground and is a fairly fast runner considering its size. They live in the damper aspen forests and love to roam in the open grasslands in Elk Island National Park in Alberta, Canada.
The horns of the Wood Bison protrude from the dark brown mass of fur that surrounds the huge head and short front legs. Lighter brown fur covers the hump and shoulders with a small portion trailing down the backside of the Wood Bison.
The adult male is the larger of the sexes and can grow up to 13 feet in length, 5.97 feet in height and weigh between 1415 and 2000 pounds. The Wood Bison loves to feast on grass and sedges but will also enjoy a meal of leaves, bark from trees and...
... shrubs.
The Wood Bison is found in five provinces across Canada and in 1957 there were only about 200 left until a recovery program was established. Since then the numbers of Wood Bison has increased considerably and at last count there were approximately 3,536.
