Information about the "Whakatane New Zealand" photograph:

At the mouth of the Whakatane River you can look a short distance across to the town of Whakatane on the North Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and lush greenery, the town of Whakatane is the perfect destination to get away from your busy lives. Relax on golden sandy beaches, try you luck at a variety of marine sports, hike, mountain bike or take a tour to see the whale and dolphins off the North Island of New Zealand.

The climate around Whakatane is excellent with more warm days than any other place in New Zealand, plenty of hours of annual sunshine and a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. The town of Whakatane, New Zealand has a permanent residency of about 15,000 with more people moving in every year to set up business and buy land to enjoy life as it is meant to be.

Whakatane has an enormous amount of history and culture where you will still find a good percentage of the local people being Maori. Wander historic trails to explore the many important places of the Maori population and listen to the many tales of years past.

To the right of the picture you get a good view of a large boulder on which the Maori Maiden Wairaka stands. This maiden is the one that named the town of Whakatane due to a terrifying event.

On an annual trip, the Mataatua canoe arrived, the men would head to land and leave all the women in the canoe at sea. At one time while they were waiting, the canoe was drifting outwards which frightened the woman. The Captain's daughter named Wairaka took charge, decided they must be as powerful as the men and she yelled the words "Whakatane" which means act like a man. They all aided in their rescue and saved themselves from being washed out to sea. This statue is a memorial to the great Maori Maiden named Wairaka.
