The banks of Lake Moeraki in Westland on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand are adorned with various types of flora, one being the tree fern which grows rapidly during the summer season. The ferns which surround the banks of the lake sometimes grow to heights which can block out the scenic view of the hillsides and the surrounding wilderness as each frond unfolds and emerges into new growth.
Throughout New Zealand, there are approximately 190 species of ferns which are native to the area and a majority of them flourish in well drained rich soils. Most of the ferns and flora can withstand winter temperatures of -2 celsius and will thrive again in the warmer seasons.
