As well as being the polical centre point of New Zealand and the countrys capital city, Wellington has a lively nightlife and is an important centre for the performing arts. Wellington is the centre for the Film and Theatre industry and is home to high profile institutions such as the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Wellington received its name in honour of the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley who was also the victor in the battle of Waterloo. It became the captial city of New Zealand in 1865, taking over from Auckland, further north.
