A Weka bird is a strong brown bird which is native to New Zealand and grows to be about the same size as a chicken. The Weka was once fairly common on the North and South Islands of New Zealand but over the years has heavily declined on the North Island due to the major damage of their habitats.
The Weka feeds on both plant and animal origin and usually stands about 50 centimeters tall when fully grown. This type of bird resides in the forests and scrub land of New Zealand and is an extremely fast runner that stays put on the ground do to its inability to fly.
Typically a shy bird, the Weka is heard more often than it is actually seen especially around the early hours of the evening. There have been known cases of the Weka taking shiny objects to build its nest or causing havoc to some of the vegetable gardens around the New Zealand region.
A fascinating type of bird to observe while traveling across the South Island of New Zealand.
