A waterfall is created for a number of reasons but most commonly when a river or a stream flows over a cliff formed along the river bed by way of a fault or along the edge of a glacial trough.
Waterfalls are a pleasure to photograph, with their clean, crisp flowing water constantly at work, shaping the landscape. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and heights and are categorized into types, namely: Horsetail, plunge, cataract, fan, cascade, block, chute, punchbowl, ribbon, slot, multi-step, segmented - just to name a few.
From the world famous Niagara Falls, a segmented block waterfall which spans the Niagara River in the Province of Ontario, Canada and New York State in the US to the more sedate Boyd Falls in Fiordland National Park of New Zealand, waterfalls install a sense of fresh vitality.
There are varying opinions on what makes a waterfall but in reality that is up to the eye of the beholder or waterfall enthusiast. Even the tiniest of cascades in the most beautiful setting can be worthy of the label and a photograph.
