The walled village of Morella in the province of Valencia, Spain sits on a rock over 1,000 meters above sea level. Above Morella, the ruins of the ancient castle, Castillo de Morella, seem to watch over the village as it must have done centuries ago.
The wall around Morella in Valencia is two and a half kilometers long with six entrance gates, and even today visitors can visualize how well fortified the village was at one time. During the Moor occupation of Spain the Arabs built the Castillo de Morella, however, over the years Morella in France has seen many battles.
Around 1088 El Cid attacked the Moors and at the end of 1231 Blasco of Alagon (a lieutenant of King Jaime 1) conquered the Moors. After that there were many wars and battles, but the little village of Morella has survived to become one of the most interesting places in Valencia, Spain.
The beautiful Santa Maria la Mayor with a blue-tile dome is another landmark to visit in Morella, and the museum should not be missed as one can find artifacts from the castle, 15th century Gothic panels and a Ribalta painting.
Walled village of Morella and ruins of Castillo de Morella, Castellon, El Maestrat, Valencia and Murcia, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain, Europe.
