Bruneck is the largest town in the Val Pusteria and 83 percent of the population, around 14,500, speaks German compared to a mere 15 percent Italian-speaking. Bruneck in the South Tyrol is about 835 meters above sea-level, although it lies in the Pusteral valley surrounded by mountains, some well over 2,000 meters high.
