The big "i"sign shows the location of the Visitor Information Centre in the town of Bruneck, (or Brunico as it is known to the Italians) in the South Tyrol region of Italy. Bruneck is the largest town in the Val Pusteria and 83 percent of the population, around 14,500, speaks German compared to a mere 15 percent Italian-speaking. Bruneck in the South Tyrol is about 835 meters above sea-level, although it lies in the Pusteral valley surrounded by mountains, some well over 2,000 meters high.
The town of Bruneck dates back to the 13th century when a local Bishop, Count Bruno von Wullenstatten und Kirchberg built the majestic castle on a hill, which consequently, in time, founded the town. The Bruneck castle still towers over the old buildings and is an outstanding landmark for visitors and local inhabitants.
In the 1200s Bruneck in Northern Italy, was the only town in the area so it quickly became an bustling community. As an important trade and cultural centre it also became wealthy, and even today the the houses and commercial buildings reflect the prosperity.
Nowadays, Bruneck has become a tourist attraction in both summer and winter, which accounts for the large Visitor Information Centre, located at Via Europa 26 in Bruneck, or Brunico in the Pusteria Valley, South Tyrol, Italy.
