Vipiteno or Sterzig (the German name) is close to the Austrian border and located in the Eisack Valley, on the main route, used for centuries, from Innsbruck in Austria to Bolzano in Italy.
Vipiteno, in the South Tyrol, started as a little mining town in the 14th century when silver and lead was discovered. Some parts of Vipiteno is typically Tyrolean - with wonderful old inns and flower filled pots, and yet is also a modern business centre and has one of the best shopping avenues in Europe.
