This Vipiteno scene silhouetted against the South Tyrolean Alps shows a church on a hill, surrounded by homes and trees with the magnificent mountains as a backdrop. A scene which probably has remained the same for many years. Vipiteno or Sterzig (the German name) is close to the Austrian border and located in the Eisack Valley, on the main route, used for centuries, from Innsbruck in Austria to Bolzano in Italy.
Vipiteno, in the South Tyrol, started as a little mining town in the 14th century when silver and lead was discovered. Some parts of Vipiteno is typically Tyrolean - with wonderful old inns and flower filled pots, and yet is also a modern business centre and has one of the best shopping avenues in Europe.
In the Museo Civico on the Via della Commenda the work of Hans Multscher from Ulm, a painter and sculptor of the 15th century is exhibited.
In 2002 the town of Vipiteno in Trentino-Alto-Adige region of South Tyrol, was named as one of Italy's most beautiful places and in the winter Vipiteno is a convenient starting place for the nearby ski runs.
