The Ponte di Rialto, the Rialto Bridge, is a Venice landmark which is usually high on the list of places to see when visiting the romantic city of Venice in Italy. The Ponte di Rialto is one of the most famous bridges in Italy and is familiar to everyone who has enjoyed William Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'.
As late as the 19th century the Rialto Bridge was the only bridge crossing the Grand Canal of Venice. The Ponte di Rialto was built on the bend of the Grand Canal as it turns in a northwest direction through the city of Venice, Italy. The bridge one sees today was finished in 1592, and took three years to build from a design by Antonio da Ponte.
The arch of the Ponte di Rialto spans 91 feet, and has two rows of interesting little shops which border a centre walkway. This busy bridge connects the San Marco and San Polo areas of Venice and from centre of the Rialto Bridge one can see the beautiful architecture of the buildings, the colourful gondolas and other boats which are all part of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
There is an endless list of things to see and do while in Venice, Italy but the Ponte di Rialto is one landmark worth seeing.
