On the eastern side of Piazetta San Marco stands the Palazzo Ducale, the Doge's Palace, which is probably the most famous Venetian Palace in the city. It is definitely the grandest Gothic palace in Venice, Italy.
Originally built in the 9th century, the Doge's Palace was enlarged from 1309 to 1424, but due to numerous fires over the years, very little remains of the early building. The power of Venice continued to grow and more bodies of government were formed, therefore, more rooms were needed in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice to accommodate these bodies. The final construction and alterations were finished in 1615.
The most outstanding room in the Doge's Palace is the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the Grand Council Chamber. This room has paintings on the walls and ceilings, one of these being 'Paradise' by Tintoretto, supposedly the largest painting on canvas in the world.
Visitors to the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia in Italy will be able to realize the power and extravagance of Venice in the city's 'glory days'. Be sure not to miss out on seeing this beautiful Venetian palace.
