At the Umpqua River Lighthouse Whale Watching Station located across from the Umpqua River Lighthouse along the Oregon Coast, there are signs regarding the gray whales and their migration. From here you can view the gray whales as they travel up and down the Oregon Coast twice throughout each year.
The gray whales travel south past the Umpqua River Lighthouse Station along the Oregon Coast during their winter migration when heading towards Baja, California. In the Spring, they can be spotted again from this station as they return north with their babies on their way back to Alaska where they spend their time feeding.
December through to January is the time span that the winter viewing is the best and near the end of March is when the Spring whale watching is good. Look for the large spray of water coming from their blowholes or their large tails as they go for a deep dive.
Other types of marine mammals that can be seen from the Umpqua River Lighthouse Station as they pass by are the Humpbacks, Killer Whales and Harbour Porpoises. Harbour Porpoises are probable throughout the entire year, Killer Whales are probable from April through August and the Humpbacks are possible from April to June and November and December but very likely to be seen from July to October.
