Since the beginning of the 16th century the Tyrolean Castle of Presule has watched over this plain of the Dolomite Mountains in the South Tyrol region of Italy. In the shadow of one of the best known mountains in the Dolomites, Mount Sciliar the Castello di Presule, as it is known in Italian, is an impressive Gothic style edifice.
The date 1517 can be seen over the entranceway of the Presule Castle which is when the building was completed. The original Castle or fortress dates back before 1279, when it was recorded as 'Castrum praesile'. The Lords of Vols/Fie, who were ministers for the Bishopric of Brixen, were commissioned to build the fortress. The keep and the archway in the centre of the castle is part of the earlier Presule Castle in the South Tyrol.
The Castello di Presule belonged to the Vols family until the early 19th century until Felix, Freiherr von Vols died in 1804. He had no children to carry on the name, so after having fourteen different owners, the Prosels Castle Curatorship was founded in 1981 - Prosels is the German name for the castle.
The Presule Castle in South Tyrol, Italy is open during the summer and at Christmas, with guided tours. Couples are able to be married in the Castle chapel, and art exhibitions, concerts and plays are held during the year.
