Two types of tours are available to see White Island, one by helicopter and the other by boat. Tourists in this picture came with a company named Peejay that is very well known for their White Island Tours.
After an approximate eighty minute boat ride, they disembark the larger vessel in the bay and board an inflatable boat to get to the shore of White Island on the North Island of New Zealand.
As tourists wander the sulphuric landscape of White Island in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand, they must wear hard hats for safety reasons. Hard hats are just a precautionary measure as White Island is an active volcano and even though it is regularly monitored, one never knows what may happen.
Walking across this unique volcanic landscape is very interesting on its own. You will get to see the old sulphur factory first where you can view the yellow sulphur crystals and then onwards to the steaming crater. This is where tourists must wear gas masks as the gases that arise from the crater of volcano can be extremely powerful.
White Island is the most fascinating volcano to see around New Zealand and these tours give you narrated explanations of the area. After an hour or two of exploring the volcano of White Island, tourists head back to the vessel to enjoy lunch and refreshments. The entire trip takes about six hours and as long as the weather around the North Island of New Zealand cooperates, these tours operate seven days a week.
