This unique place in St. Johns, Newfoundland is known as The Battery and it sits under the rocky cliffs of Signal Hill. Entering the harbour of the Avalon Peninsula, you will see The Battery which lies along the coastline of St. Johns, Newfoundland.
A place that is frequented by rockfalls and one that has also been the victim of a few avalanches over past years. The first avalanche that hit The Battery was in 1921 and it took a house three meters down the slope but luckily nobody was killed even though houses were destroyed.
The second major avalanche occurred ten days after the first and killed a man. For thirty-eight years after that the area of The Battery remained quiet. In 1959, a fierce storm hit the coastline of St. Johns, Newfoundland causing an avalanche which hit two houses in The Battery and killed five people with several other noted injuries.
In 1960, yet another storm hit the St. Johns coastline and The Battery was home to another avalanche with no reported injuries. The year 1987 had residents being dug out and in 1995 an inspection of the slopes was done. The outcome was confirmed that rockfalls and avalanches are inevitable and safety fences were put up to avoid any other serious mishaps in The Battery in St. Johns, Newfoundland.
There have been no other reported incidents in The Battery since and many tourists walk along the harbour near Signal Hill to explore the historic village in St. Johns, Newfoundland.
