Tall Male Orca Northern Vancouver Island: Scientific Name:
Orcinus orca
Close to the coastline off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, a male Orca shows off his tall dorsal fin while surfacing. The dorsal fin, especially on a male Orca, is the first thing seen when a Killer Whale surfaces and usually the last thing seen before diving.
Being able to capture a large male Orca on film while in these waters is spectacular in itself, but having the scenic view of the mountain range in the background is an added bonus. Although this is the only Orca seen in this picture, the rest of his family is never far away and they are always within calling distance of the matriarch.
