Information about the "Symbolic Carving Maori Village Taupo New Zealand" photograph:

A carving of Horomatangi in the Maori village at the Wairakei Terraces near Taupo, New Zealand is displayed atop a stump overlooking the area. Horomatangi, according to the legends, is a God brought from Hawaikii to aid the sisters Kuiwai and Haungaroa to Taupo. It was told that this God dove into the sea, traveled underground and reappeared in the waters of Lake Taupo blowing off a light rock into the air like that from a volcano.

He then saw the sisters off in the distance, dove back into the water into the underwater thruway where a whirlpool was formed at the entrance. Apparently, the channel still is around to this day.

The carving which stands in the Maori village is very symbolic to the people and Horomatangi is known to still guard the lake.
