The soft, fragrant Sweet Briar of the family Rosaceae, is a deciduous European flowering shrub which grows 1-3 metres tall and consists of woody stems or canes with unequal hooked prickles/spines.
The clear-pink flowers consisting of 5 petals each, are 5-6 cm across and have a pleasant light fragrance. The Sweet Briar shrub flowers in summer then when the flowering is finished and the petals drop the plant harbours long lasting, bright-red hips that ripen in early winter. These hips have a high vitamin C content and are therefore used commerically in rose hip syrups.
