Just before the close of another day in the waters off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada as sunset highlights the sky, a family of Killer Whales passes by. The yellow sky seems to be endless from the sunset as a line of clouds attempt to block out the brightness of the sun.
Sunset is an exceptional time of day to photograph a family of Killer Whales as the lighting is ideal, the water's are often calm and all other whale watching boats have headed home. The rays of light shine across the surface of the water just as a couple of family members pass by making the mist from their blowhole appear magical.
In this family, a male Killer Whale leads the pod with female whales following closely behind. One of the female whales is the matriarch of this family and the male Killer Whale along with the other females will follow the calls of the eldest female.
The Northern Resident Killer Whales are a common sight around the waters off Northern Vancouver Island during the summer months, but one never knows in which direction they will be heading. This family is resting atop the water as if they are enjoying the sunset colors before darkness takes over and they search for a salmon dinner.
