The Waitemata Harbour while it plays host to a parade of leisure boats, cruise ships and freight ships, is also the playground for many Auckland City dwellers. The natural harbour is enveloped between the central business district of the city, the North Shore, and the Western suburbs of the Waitakere District.
To the north of the harbour is Mt Victoria which is the highest volcano on the North Shore of Auckland and affords stupendous panoramic views of the central business district especially during sunset. The view from Mt Victoria in Devonport at sunset shows the sun setting to the west, silhouetting the high rise buildings, the 328 metre Sky Tower, and...
... shipping traffic on the harbour.
The name of the Waitemata is derived from the Maori Language originally meant obsidian glass, however it was later translated to sparkling waters as it glinted like the prized volcanic glass - which it does even more so when the sun reflects off it's surface at sunset.
The sun sets above Auckland City and Sky Tower as seen from Mt Victoria Reserve and Lookout in the suburb of Devonport on the North Shore across the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand.
Brillant yellow fills the sky as the sun hangs above the Waitemata Harbour and central business district in the city of Auckland, New Zealand's largest metropolitan situated on the North Island.
