Mount Ngauruhoe is a beautifully shaped volcano located in Tongariro National Park on the North Island of New Zealand. Mt Ngauruhoe is an active stratovolcano in New Zealand and it is the youngest vent and second highest peak in the Tongariro volcanic complex.
A volcano is separated into three main types with one being the cinder cone volcano, another the sheild volcano and the third being the stratovolcano. Ngauruhoe being a stratovolcano on the North Island of New Zealand stands at 7,516 feet high and is rated as a number one on the alert level which means there are signs of volcano unrest. The experts are always watching Mt Ngauruhoe and the other volcanoes of New Zealand for the slightest change in their activity.
Since 1839, Mount Ngauruhoe has erupted 61 times and is New Zealand's most active stratovolcano with the last eruption being in 1975.
Summer mountain climbing on the North Island of New Zealand is a great time to explore Mt Ngauruhoe and get a true look at a stratovolcano. In winter months, the steep slopes make it somewhat difficult even for the experienced mountaineers.
