The strange formations of earth pyramids located near the village of Ritten, are one of most interesting features on the Ritten plateau in the South Tyrol of Italy. The Ritten earth pyramids are quite a geological oddity - the strange formations date back to the latter part of the ice era when a moraine clay was deposited by the glacier from the Elsack valley.
While the moraine clay is dry it is stone-like, however when it becomes wet the clay 'melts' and slips downhill. The Ritten earth pyramids are formed by the erosion of the clay cliffs. The rain is Nature's sculptor of these strange formations of pinnacles or 'organ pipes'.
The Ritten plateau in the South Tyrol is around 1200 meters above sea-level, but it has quite gentle...
... slopes and many paths, totaling over 250 kilometers. As well as the Ritten earth pyramids, visitors who like to hike will find many interesting places to see and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains in the South Tyrol region of Italy.
