Once known as the "mauka" route, State Highway 190 runs through the barren desert land of Death Valley, California in the USA. The Funeral Mountains which are part of the scenery on the drive along Highway 190 are extremely dry and appear as large sand dunes from a distance.
This section of the limestone hills that extend into Death Valley National Park are anywhere from 2,200 to 4,950 feet high. Not many people are seen traveling into the hot arid hills of Funeral Mountains in California but bighorn sheep are sometimes seen. Most tourists or locals continue on along State Highway 190 in California until they reach their next destination.
Parts of Highway 190 were wiped out in August 2004 due to torrential floods and thirteen...
... miles of the highway had to be redone. The new sections were finally completed in April, 2005 and many people were elated that Highway 190 had reopened.
