Wenceslas Square in Prague in the Czech Republic was named in 1848, but it wasn't until 1912 that the giant statue of St. Wenceslas was erected in the Square, near the National Museum. He is the patron saint of Bohemia, born near Prague in 907 and murdered in 935.
St. Wenceslas is shown astride his horse, and at each of the corners stand four saints. St. Procopius, a 10th century abbot who performed cures and miracles, and after his death he was sainted by Pope Innocent III in 1204. St. Agnes was born in 1205, she built a Franciscan hospital and helped the poor and lepers until her death in 1282.
St. Adalbert was born around 957 and he became a Benedictine monk, he and other missionaries were martyred in 997. St. Ludmila was the grandmother of St. Wenceslas. After his father was killed in battle, when Wenceslas was thirteen, Ludmila raised the boy and taught him to love Christ. She was murdered by order of Drahomira, Wenceslas' mother, who was jealous of Ludmila's influence over the boy.
The statue was designed by J.V. Mylsbek who was a city planner for Prague. A new shopping centre in Prague in the Czech Republic, has been named in honor of Mylsbek.
