Also known as the Stephansdom, St Stephen's Cathedral is a famous landmark in the centre of the bustling city of Vienna and is recognised as a symbol of freedom.
The gothic style tower stands at a height of 136 metres and watches over the Stephansplatz. The St Stephen's Cathedral was constructed in 1147 AD and was for some time considered the highest building in Europe.
Although the Cathedral has survived many wars, it was not so lucky near the end of World War 2, after street fighting broke out in the Vienna, sparks lit the roof and the cathedral suffered significant damage. The Cathedral has been restored and now the roof features a beautiful mosaic of ceramic tiles which were donated by locals in 1950 and added to the structure in 1952.
