Of all the buildings in the massive complex at Prague Castle, the Basilica of St. George is the oldest church which was founded back around 920. Additions were added to the Basilica in 973 which included the Benedictine Convent of St. George and it was not until 1142 that a massive fire destroyed the Basilica and it had to be rebuilt.
The difference being in the rebuild is that the facade of the Basilica of St George now only dates back from 1671 - 1691. There are fabulous frescoes in the interior of the dome which were done by Vaclav Vavrinec Reiner. Inside the chapel of St. Ludmila there are tombs belonging to the famous saint, the wife of Prince Borivoj, Prince Vratislav and Boleslav II.
The architecture of the St. George Basilica is stunning and for today's purposes the Basilica has now been transformed into a concert hall. The decor of the building is ideal for the earlier classical concerts that are put on in the Basilica of St. George which have become a very popular event throughout the years.
The interior of the Basilica of St George in the Prague Castle complex in the Czech Republic is what really makes one take note of the dated walls and the art work around the basilica. When you are visiting Prague Castle in the Czech Republic, be sure to stop by the Basilica of St. George to see one of the concerts. The building is outstanding for its acoustics but come prepared in the winter months as it can become fairly chilly inside.
