Spring Flood Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park Ontario Canada

The raging flood waters of the Kaministiquia River career over the Kakabeka Falls after heavy spring rain. The Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park is situated approximately 25 kilometres west of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Although the bulk of the water which flows over the Kakabeka Falls is used for hydro power generation, the gates were opened this day to let the flood waters through.

Kakabeka Falls is situated within the provincial park of the same name, and with a width of approximately 69 metres and a drop of 40 metres (131 feet) it is the second highest waterfall in the province of Ontario - the Niagara Falls being the highest. The Kakabeka Falls are dubbed the Niagara of the North. The rocks of the escarpment are known to host some of the oldest fossils in world.
