The Spider Monkey is a vulnerable species in the wild as they have no protected habitat and since the 1950's the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand has successfully been able to breed them. A lot of the Spider Monkeys from the Auckland Zoo have been sent to other zoos to establish breeding colonies so that the Spider Monkey never becomes extinct.
The Spider Monkey is a very social animal and tends to form groups of thirty or more individuals. They eat mainly ripe fruit, sometimes leaves or flowers and seem to feed heavily in the early morning and rest for the remainder of the day.
