Other purchase options for Spider Monkey Auckland Zoo
Spider Monkeys have a natural fear of the water and at Auckland Zoo this fact has enabled them to be kept in an island enclosure which enables them to roam somewhat freely.
Living in the forest canopy the Spider Monkey exists in loose groups of around 30 animals. They eat mostly fruit, but are very fussy eaters and only the bestest and freshest will do!
Males mark territory with scent glands on their chests and by smearing their spit and faeces. Spider Monkeys will growl, bark and shake branches to scare enemies and possible competitors.
Spider Monkeys have prehensile tails. They can grip branches and act as an extra hand. The tail easily supports the monkey's weight, which frees up all four limbs for feeding. With sweat glands and nerve ending, the tail has its own fingerprint and no two are the same.
