Mt Aspiring is located in Mt Aspiring National Park on the South Island of New Zealand, and is a popular spot for climbers to come to try and climb this great mountain as it is one of the tallest in the whole country. It is 3,033 metres high and the Maori named it 'Tititea', which means glistening peak as the top of the mountain reaches so high in to the sky that it is closer to the sun and therefore glistens more.
This glorious mountain is sometimes called the 'Matterhorn of the South' as it has a pyramid shaped peak when seen from certain angles. It was however named Mt. Aspiring in 1857 by...
... John Turnbull Thomson as it appears to be aspiring to reach the top of the sky.
The mountain lies at the junction of three major glaciers: the Bonar Glacier, the Volta Glacier, and the Therma Glacier.
Major Bernard Head made the first ascent of the mountain on 23 November 1909 and him and his team made it to the summit ridge, by a route that was not repeated again until 1965.
