For a change of pace visitors or locals should take a tour on the Small Train Avignon through the historic streets of Avignon in Vaucluse, Provence in France. The first Small Train began in 1976 and ten years later on April 11, 1986 the Mayor of Avignon inaugurated the second train. The two trains have sixty seats and the tour of the walled city of Avignon takes 35 minutes.
The ramparts (walls) of Avignon, Vaucluse were constructed between 1369 and 1370, but by the 19th century they needed some restoration although the moats were not saved.
The Small Train of Avignon begins the tour at the Palais des Papes then travels to the Rocher des Doms and the gardens, from here the view of Avignon and the river is spectacular. Next comes the Ramparts, then the Pont St. Benezet (of the 'sur le Pont d'Avignon' song).
The Small Train passes through the lively Place Crillon and along Rue Joseph-Vernet. The Tourist Information, Place St Didier, where the Church of St Didier stands and Place St Pierre, where the beautiful Eglise St Pierre can be seen, are the final stops. From Place St Pierre the Small Train of Avignon in Vaucluse returns to the Palais des Papes, and for just a few Euros visitors have seen much of Avignon's history.
