... the area where the gold was discovered by two Maori miners and when the miners came to see if they could find their own gold, many hotels and make-shift pubs and restaurants sprung up here. However, the area has sinced returned to some of its former glory as people realized that not everyone would be as lucky with the yellow metal as the first two miners were. Some were however, and this Canyon made the fortune of some very lucky men.
Aside from the adventure sports that this region has to offer, there are some preserved buildings from the mining heyday, so it's worth it to stop by and see some of the old buildings and see how a mining town was built and then eventually abandoned.
