La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange) is one of the most interesting attractions in the city of Valencia, Valencia in Spain and is well worth a visit. Originally founded in 1469 as a market for oil the building was not finished until 1498.
The architects, Johan Corbera, Pedro Compte and Juan Yvarra, based the design on a building in Palma de Mallorca and is a splendid example of Gothic architecture with stained-glass windows and spiral columns. More decorative work and construction continued until 1533.
A Latin inscription on the walls of La Lonja states "I am a famous building that took fifteen years to build". The rich silk merchants of Valencia funded the construction and it was often called 'the merchants' house' or the 'silk market' and for this reason was also called the Silk Exchange.
On December 7th 1996 La Lonja de la Seda in Valencia, Spain became an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
