Atop Kelly's Mountain at an overlook you get a beautiful view of the Seal Island Bridge that crosses over the Great Bras d'Or in Nova Scotia, Canada. Seal Island Bridge is a significant landmark in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia as it is the third longest bridge in the Province.
Highway 105 travels over the Seal Island Bridge which was first opened in 1961 and has an arch that measures five hundred feet high and eight steel truss spans to hold the bridge up.
Many controversies took place while the plans for the construction of the new Seal Island Bridge were underway due to the location and for political reasons. The original location of the bridge would have highly interfered with two different ferry systems and the communities were concerned because of their transportation usages.
Eventually it was decided to build the bridge between the two ferry links but that also meant having to modify parts of Kelly's Mountain. In doing this, there is a massive switchback descending down Kelly's Mountain that has caused many serious accidents and deaths. In reality, there was an alternate and safer route that should have been used but politics got in the way.
Over the years, people have come to realize that the construction of Seal Island Bridge in Nova Scotia was a good thing and travel has become easier.
